Legislation
Financial equity for N.C. charter schools
As a unified voice, the Coalition works to advance statutory changes to ensure that all public school funds follow the child. Existing inequities within per pupil local funding and state-level grants that have omitted access for public charter schools in legislation must be addressed.
Regulatory equity for N.C. charter schools
Recent court rulings and legislative action have resulted in the requirement that all policies affecting charter schools must be reviewed by the Regulatory Rules Commission. As the only trade association for North Carolina charter schools, the Coalition serves as the leading charter school voice in Raleigh to the rules commission, the state legislature, and all regulatory bodies, as we work to advocate for the flexibility and innovation that we know are foundational for charter school success.
Communication
Providing timely, effective communication
Through the development and execution of a statewide communication plan, the Coalition provides its charter school members with important policy updates and action items originating from state boards and agencies, as well as the N.C. General Assembly.
Communications to members include timely legislative updates on bills of interest to charter operators, along with our exclusive monthly newsletter, the Coalition Connection. Each issue of the Coalition Connection provides a comprehensive update on meetings of the State Board of Education and the Charter Schools Advisory Board, along with committee and legislative summaries from the N.C. General Assembly, upcoming election information, and other items of interest to public charter schools.
When the legislature is in session, members also are invited to participate in bi-weekly legislative briefings, hosted by the Coalition’s Government Relations Team.
Education
Compiling information critical for voters
Elections have consequences. Understanding this, the Coalition works steadily and proactively to educate voters about education issues and local candidates. Education involves compiling candidate questionnaires, developing voter guides, and creating other support material to ensure voters have what they need to make informed choices at the polls—and that they know how the candidates view education issues that are critical to the Coalition’s mission and to the sustainability and growth of public charter schools.
